There is a new CEO at the Glendale Chamber of Commerce and West Valley veterans say he is indeed “on fire” to advance the workforce solutions that military talent provides.
Since his arrival a short time ago, Chamber CEO Joshua Gunn has launched several new initiatives to support our military veterans and families, including:
- The emergence of a business-led military talent workforce consortium. Although the development of this coalition is in its infancy, Glendale is currently identifying the key advisors to shape its design and will invite primary community stakeholder groups to participate.
- Developing the Employer Enablement Event co-hosted with Hiring Our Heroes and 50 Strong this past January. They plan to co-host this event annually and significantly grow the engagement of local employers.
- The Military Transition Support Programto create informal job shadow programs with area businesses and expand the professional civilian networks of transitioning service members.
- The annual Military Appreciation Ceremonycelebrates community service by actively serving armed forces members.
- Creating a Civilian Veteran Champion Awardfor the business leader who demonstrates exceptional support for the military-connected population, particularly regarding successful employment and community integration.
Gunn says his vision is far-reaching.
“I desire to create a regional workforce pipeline that connects military professionals and their families to sustainable career opportunities and strengthens the broader West Valley economy. Glendale, as the proud home of Luke Air Force Base, is responsible for leading this effort. However, we recognize that this challenge is bigger than any one city—it requires collaboration across the entire West Valley to ensure military professionals and their families have the best possible opportunities,” he said.
Gunn adds that Chambers of Commerce are the key conduits into the business community, uniquely positioned to bring together employers, policymakers, and workforce development partners to create real, lasting change.
“Our research has shown that military professionals face significant hurdles in finding employment after their service, and even when they do, turnover rates tend to be higher because many employers aren’t equipped with the tools to support them. That’s why our approach goes beyond just hosting job fairs—we’re building an ecosystem of support. Through strategic partnerships, networking opportunities, and an advisory council that includes business leaders, military professionals, and community stakeholders, we’re ensuring that our military families don’t just get hired—they thrive,” he added.
Joshua Gunn adds, “For me, this work is personal. My father was an Air Force veteran who served for 20 years, including two terms in Vietnam. I saw firsthand how difficult it can be for military professionals to transition into civilian life and the impact those difficulties can have on one’s family. Shifting from structured military service into an often uncertain job market is tough. Too frequently, these highly skilled and deeply committed professionals struggle to find careers that match their expertise, leadership, and work ethic,” he said.
In closing, he reminds those in Glendale, “This isn’t just about jobs; it’s about economic growth, community stability, and honoring the sacrifices of those who serve. When we come together as a region, we don’t just support military professionals; we create a stronger, more resilient workforce for everyone,” he said.
