I recently had the privilege of attending the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society’s annual in-person meeting. It was inspiring to see how they continue to recognize and support veterans.
The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame (AVHOF) was established in 2001 by Unified Arizona Veterans (UAV) to recognize veterans who served honorably in the military and made significant contributions to their communities afterward. Each year, UAV carefully selects more than 20 veterans for induction and submits them to the Governor for approval. Medal of Honor recipients from Arizona are automatically inducted.
Recognizing the importance of continued service, the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society was formed in 2007 to support inducted veterans and further their service mission. Membership is automatic upon induction, with no dues required. The Society’s core mission is to preserve military traditions, advocate for veterans, and promote responsible citizenship through various programs and initiatives.
Celebrating Service and Patriotism
The Society actively supports veteran causes and hosts key events each year, including:
- Induction Ceremony (October): Held annually on the last Friday in October, this prestigious event celebrates new inductees. The Governor or Secretary of State personally presents each inductee with the AVHOF medallion and ribbon. Applications for the 2025 Class are now open. - Patriotic Awards Luncheon (May 9): The Society’s premier event recognizes individuals and organizations that go above and beyond in supporting veterans.
- The Copper Sword Award honors an outstanding patriot who, though not a veteran, has significantly supported the veteran community.
- The Copper Eagle Award recognizes an organization—public or private—that has provided exceptional service to veterans.
- Scholarships are awarded to high school students who have volunteered at VA facilities, participated in Imprints for Honor, or are veterans pursuing higher education.
- UAV also presents its Copper Shield Award to an Arizona legislator advocating for veterans and the Copper Star Award to a public agency that has made a significant impact.
A Lasting Tribute
Beyond events, the Society offers a touching Flags for Families program. When a Society member passes, their family is presented with an encased, engraved Arizona flag to recognize their service and legacy. A fellow Society member personally delivers this tribute at the memorial service, ensuring their contributions are never forgotten.
The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society is a shining example of what it means to honor, serve, and remember.
