Last week, I invited readers to share how military values have shaped their lives. The heartfelt responses I received demonstrate the enduring impact of these principles on individuals and families.
Colonel Len Kirschner, M.D., U.S. Air Force (retired), called to reflect on how courage, commitment, and respect helped him cope with the loss of a colleague during the Vietnam War. Kirschner met Bruce Farrell in the summer of 1961 at San Francisco General Hospital, where they worked as interns after graduating from medical school.
“We knew the military was in our future. Bruce chose the Navy, seeking an attachment with the Marines. He was deployed to Da Nang and volunteered for a mission that led to his death. Feeling the profound impact of his loss on his family, I made a promise to stay connected with his three sisters.
They eventually had sons, and all named their sons Bruce in his honor. I’ve kept in touch with them over the years, and this spring, those sons are visiting Phoenix for Spring Training. My wife, Peggy, and I are hosting them.”
Kirschner’s story embodies the courage it took to support a grieving family and his commitment to preserve Farrel’s memory. We also discussed how respect for those who served, especially those who gave their lives, remains vital to honoring our nation’s veterans.
Another veteran wrote to share his perspective on the often overlooked but deeply significant sacrifices made by military families.
“Dedication deserves recognition as a core value in its own right.
We veterans are often acknowledged for our service, but the sacrifices of our spouses and families rarely receive the same recognition. I remember boarding a plane for Vietnam, leaving behind my wife and six children, ages five to fifteen. My wife became the cornerstone of our family, carrying the weight of responsibility in my absence.
This is just one example of the sacrifices asked for by military families. The dedication of the spouse left behind often equals or exceeds that of the service member deployed.
I would love to see more recognition for military spouses’ incredible strength and resilience. My wife, who recently passed away, deserves to be honored for her unwavering dedication.”
This veteran, who wishes to remain anonymous, reminds us of the quiet heroism displayed by military families.
I am deeply grateful to these two Vietnam veterans for sharing their stories and for their courage in doing so. Their words remind us of the profound ways military values—courage, commitment, respect, and dedication—shape those who serve and everyone touched by their sacrifice.
